Carnaval/Carnival

(Groups, Parade, instruments, songs)

Anytime between February 2nd and the end of March, it is time for Carnival.  The end marks the end of Lent and it is usually the Sunday after Ash Wednesday. It is a similar celebration to that of New Orleans of Rio de Janeiro.

In Gran Canaria, this year's carnival happened to be February 6 to 28, 2004.

Pregón: This announcement marks the beginning of the carnaval.

Mogollones: The concerts that are performed almost nightly.  They are the soul of the carnaval.

Entierro de la Sardina:  The burial of the Sardine marks the end of the Carnival.  A long parade of dressed widows in black weep for they know it will be another whole year before another celebration will begin again.
