A folk song collection of the Canary Islands, Spain

Introduction

Since I left the Canary Islands to come study in the North East part of the United States, I have dreamed of writing a book that includes a collection of songs from these islands and from Spain.  Spain is a vast country of over 40.000.000 inhabitants.  Many times, its people and its music get lamped together with the music of Central and South America.  Just like the music from Ireland and the music from Scotland have its place, the music of Spain and all its different regions, have an origin, history, and tradition.  This is the reason for the collection of songs that I have gathered and published.  It is only a small token for awareness and preservation of a live culture.

Aim

The aim of this collection is to include folk songs transcribed by the author from primary sources ('straight from the horses mouth').  But I have found in my many years of teaching that this is not enough.  There are now many collections and folk songs and it by themselves do not mean much.  Many times we make the mistake of forgetting to put them in context.  I have included an history of them, games, photos, and as much information as was related to me through interviews and conversations with locals.  The photos included in the book are from places where these songs where sang, games where played. 

There is also a section that includes the instrumentation that is indigenous to this music.  Photos are included and the sound is described.  There are also photos of the folklore bands that sing and play them.  As well, the dancers that dance these songs.

Recording

I have also included a recording with the book.  It includes sounds of the typical instruments.  It also includes the songs.
